Can You Use Radiant Heat Under Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is a popular, affordable way to bring the natural beauty of wood or stone into your home. But can you install radiant heat beneath it? The answer is yes—with some important precautions. In this guide, we’ll walk you through what to consider before pairing radiant heat with vinyl plank flooring to ensure safety, comfort, and durability.

What is Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Luxury vinyl flooring is a type of flooring that’s adopted many names over the years, all with very similar construction. Many times this flooring category is referred to by acronyms such as LVP/LVT, WPC, EVP/EVT, and SPC, or terms such as luxury vinyl plank/tile, enhanced vinyl plank/tile, rigid core, resilient plank, hybrid resilient, etc. The “P” or “plank” refers to the visuals that look like hardwood floors, and “T” or “tile” refers to those that look like a ceramic tile or natural stone.

Regardless of name, this type of flooring is individual plank- or tile- sized pieces of flooring made from multiple layers fused together. Each manufacturer has different components to the layers, but most have some sort of polymers, with stone, wood, or similar additives to strengthen the core. On top of the core is a printed visual that looks like the type of wood or stone the product is emulating. The final layer is a clear wear layer that protects the floor from scratches, stains, and fading from sunlight.

The most common type of luxury vinyl has a “click-together” or “locking” mechanism that creates a floating floor- no glue or adhesive required to affix it to the substrate.

Luxury Vinyl flooring is a popular choice for many homeowners because it is durable, easy to install, and clean. It’s also more affordable than hardwood or tile floors and looks great if you want to add a gorgeous, natural, and organic-looking touch.

It is important not to confuse luxury vinyl with sheet vinyl. Sheet vinyl is a “rolled good” that is thin, flexible and often comes 6, 12 or 13 feet wide.

What is Radiant Heat?

Radiant heat is a type of heating that uses radiant energy to warm up an object. Radiant energy is electromagnetic waves that travel through the air, transferring their energy to objects they encounter.

So, electromagnetic waves travel up into the room, but once they come into contact with an object, this energy is turned into heat. This radiant heat contact warms the objects, which in the case of flooring, creates a floor that is warm to the touch.

Can Radiant Heat be Used Under Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Yes, radiant heat can be used under luxury vinyl plank flooring. There are some precautions you should take to ensure safe operation without damaging your flooring. The first is to ensure the radiant heating system is compatible with the vinyl flooring. There are many different types of systems on the market, and not all flooring manufacturers approve their flooring for use over radiant heat.

You should also ensure that your heating system on average doesn’t exceed 80-85°F, as this is usually the safe temperature limit for vinyl plank flooring. Be sure to check your vinyl plank flooring manufacturer’s instructions for the exact temperature as they may vary.

It is also wise to avoid the use of heavy area rugs or flat-bottom furniture in the heated areas. The heat generated by radiant heat systems needs to dissipate into the room, but rugs and furniture insulate and trap that heat, potentially overheating and damaging your flooring.

Some systems, such as hydronic or electric cable systems, get very hot so they need to be installed with a layer of cementitious compound between the heating and the flooring to dissipate the heat and safeguard against thermal shock. Most manufacturers specify a minimum of ½” thickness of separation for these types of systems.

These systems should also be installed days to weeks in advance of the flooring, so the cementitious compounds have time to properly cure. You also need to gradually raise the temperature of the heating system, roughly increasing by five degrees a day until you reach your desired temperature. This is the best way to avoid damaging either your heating system or flooring.

Other systems, such as QuietWarmth Float, should be installed directly below the luxury vinyl flooring as this system does not exceed 85°F and provides even, gentle heating to the flooring. You can install the flooring the same day as QuietWarmth Float, and you can operate the system immediately following installation, without a gradual increase in heating.

How to Choose and Install a Radiant Heating System Under Vinyl Plank Flooring

When choosing a radiant heating system for your vinyl plank flooring, there are many factors in deciding which one is right from you. Consider the cost, ease of installation, level of expertise required to install, potential future maintenance, and areas you want to heat.

Hydronic (heated water) Systems are a complex network of pipes connected to a heat source, such as a boiler. The tubes are embedded in concrete, usually 1.5 to 2 inches below the surface. While highly efficient with low operating costs, these systems have a much higher initial cost and require careful planning and a skilled professional to install.

Electric Cable or Wire Systems are a network of resistance wires installed with clips or in the form of mesh mats that are embedded in concrete or other cementitious compounds. These systems are generally going to be ½” to 2” thick. While typically easier to plan and install than hydronic systems, they also require a skilled professional and can be a lengthy process.

QuietWarmth Float is a radiant heat system designed specifically for floating flooring, such as luxury vinyl. They are a thin, conductive ink film that generates just enough radiant energy to gently and safely warm your flooring. They are easy to install and operate, and do not raise the overall height of the flooring. QuietWarmth Float is a great option for DIY-ers and professional contractors alike. is not difficult as long as you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Many homeowners and fans of DIY can easily complete this project themselves with guided instructions, or you can get a professional handyperson to fit it for you.
